The department of Metallurgical Engineering is one of the earliest academic departments at Anhui University of Technology. With a long school history and a profound discipline accumulation, it began to recruit undergraduate student majoring in metallurgical engineering (ironmaking, steelmaking) from 1977. The department obtained the rights of granting master degree for the major of ferrous metallurgy from 1990. The discipline of metallurgical engineering began to train doctoral students jointly with University of Science and Technology of Beijing from 1996, and the discipline of metallurgical physics and chemistry received the rights of granting master degree in 2000. The discipline of metallurgical engineering was authorized to offer master degree program in 2005, approved as one of the most important key disciplines of Anhui Province and selected into the national characteristic disciplinary construction points in 2008, authorized to offer doctor degree program in 2013, and approved to establish a postdoctoral research center in 2014. It successfully passed the professional certification of engineering education of the Ministry of Education in 2015, selected into specialty (brand) discipline of Anhui Province in 2017, passed the site inspection of second round of professional certification in 2018, and selected into the provincial first-class demonstration and leading bases for undergraduate talents.
The trained students have achieved excellent successes in the “Challenge Cup” for several consecutive years, including one national first prize and one gold prize. The department have got one second prize of national teaching achievement, one special prize, one first prize and one second prize of teaching achievement of Anhui province, one second prize and one third prize of scientific and technological progress of Anhui province, and two third prizes of metallurgical science and technology.
There are 35 teachers with PhD degree in the department of metallurgical engineering, including one academic and technical leader and two reserve candidates of Anhui province, one “excellent scientific and technological workers in the iron and steel industry”, three “advanced metallurgical young scientific and technological workers of The Chinese Society for Metals” and “winners of metallurgical dean award of national university”. The department has two master teachers and two new star teachers, and four teachers won Baosteel excellent teacher award. At present, the department maintains an academic environment of unity and cooperation, relaxed atmosphere and reasonable teacher structure. It has one provincial teaching team, two school-level scientific and technological innovation teams, and two school-level teaching teams.
